Norland Principal Dr Janet Rose has co-authored a book on emotion coaching for educational settings, which has been shortlisted for the Learning Ladders’ Best Books for Educators Summer 2021 awards.

Emotion Coaching with Children and Young People in Schools: Promoting Positive Behaviour provides practical tips, suggested resources and case studies in supporting educational settings to promote empathetic responses to challenging behaviours and situations, helping children and young people to understand their emotions and learn to manage them and their behaviour in the longer-term.

Emotion coaching is a communication strategy which supports children and young people to self-regulate and manage their stress responses. Originally noticed as an effective way that parents communicated with their children around challenging behaviours, the strategy has been shown to be highly successful in educational settings too. This is why the book’s authors Janet Rose, Louise Gilbert and Licette Gus pioneered the research and application of emotion coaching into UK (primary and secondary) schools and community settings.

The book includes a foreword by renowned US psychologist John Gottman who developed the evidence-based communication strategy.
