Principal Dr Janet Rose and Vice Principal Dr Rebecca Digby have co-authored a chapter in the newly published fifth edition of Learning to Teach in the Primary School.

Published by Routledge, this book – part of the Primary School series – is a comprehensive and accessible introduction to teaching and learning in the primary school. Designed to support student and practising teachers by enriching their knowledge and understanding, the book focuses on practical suggestions underpinned by theory and research to help teachers successfully engage their pupils.

The chapter from Dr Rose and Dr Digby provides an introduction to early years provision in the UK with a focus on practice in England, highlighting key issues and challenges in relation to early years education.

Drawing on holistic perspectives, the chapter examines what an appropriate learning environment and pedagogical approach might look like and considers the ongoing debate regarding formal instruction and play-based learning. It also highlights the adult’s role in supporting and optimising children’s development and the importance of recognising diverse experiences during the transition to school.

Dr Digby said: “We are delighted to have had the opportunity to discuss the significance of early years education and draw attention to the value of holistic perspectives in this important text. A holistic approach is central to teaching and learning at Norland where we provide opportunities for students to develop the knowledge, skills and experience essential to making a positive impact on young children’s education and care.”
