Norland Principal Dr Janet Rose has been featured in an episode of the charity Attachment Research Community’s ‘Creating Connections’ podcast.

Dr Rose joined Senior Educational Psychologist Dr Alex Rouse for a discussion on emotion coaching, attachment-aware practice and building positive relationships with children and young people.

Dr Rose said: “Emotion coaching and relational pedagogy lie at the heart of the Norland curriculum. It was a pleasure to discuss how attachment-aware and relational approaches can make a meaningful difference to children and young people’s emotional wellbeing, learning and development, and to share insights from the work with colleagues across the education and early years sectors.”

Emotion coaching is about helping children understand and manage their emotions and behaviour through supportive, trusting relationships and co-regulatory strategies. Relational pedagogy is premised on the social connection between practitioner and child and is a collaborative and contingent process built on empathy, trust and mutual respect.

Dr Rose has worked closely with the Attachment Research Community for many years, contributing to workshops, keynote presentations and professional development activities focused on trauma-informed education and emotion coaching. A former trustee of the charity, she is currently part of an Attachment Research Community working group developing early years trauma-responsive resources alongside Norland colleagues as part of the institution’s wider charitable and community engagement work.

The ‘Creating Connections’ podcast series features conversations with practitioners and thought leaders whose work is helping to improve outcomes for children and young people through relationship-based approaches.
