On 27 February the Mayor, Councillor Professor Bharat Pankhania will deliver a masterclass for second-year students forming part of their Promoting Health in Practice module.
Norland is delighted to welcome the Mayor of Bath, Councillor Professor Bharat Pankhania, who will deliver a specialist lecture for students on Thursday 27 February as part of Norland’s value‑added curriculum.
Councillor Professor Bharat Pankhania is an expert on health and infectious disease control, a senior clinical lecturer at Exeter University Medical School and a visiting professor at MARJON University. The Mayor’s involvement in this lecture aligns closely with his theme for the year which is Education is Empowerment.
The lecture will focus on key public health topics relevant to professional childcare practice. Drawing on his extensive expertise in infectious disease control, the Mayor will explore subjects including vaccines, antibiotics, bacteria and viruses, mutations, healthcare‑associated infections, food safety, and the management of outbreaks in nurseries and home settings.
The Promoting Health in Practice module provides students with a critical understanding of children’s health needs and explores how to genuinely include and support those with long‑term health conditions. It also highlights the nanny’s role in promoting holistic wellbeing, ensuring students are equipped to foster healthy, inclusive environments for every child. The Mayor’s lecture directly supports this learning by connecting scientific knowledge with real‑world scenarios students may encounter in nursery, home‑based and family care environments.
Norland regularly welcomes external speakers as part of its value‑added curriculum, enhancing academic study with specialist insight and real‑world perspectives.
Opportunities such as this lecture help ensure Norland students graduate with both the practical skills and the broader professional understanding required to support children’s health, safety and wellbeing in an increasingly complex world.
