Principal Dr Janet Rose and Associate Lecturer/Consultant Julia Gaskell were invited to provide Continuing Professional Development training at the Royal Academy of Dance in April.

The training, hosted at the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) in London as part of their RAD China CPD programme – a five day programme with 52 dance teachers from various cities across China as well as six members of staff from RAD China.

The two sessions, which covered ‘The Just Right State’ and ‘The Neurophysiology of Early Childhood Development’ were in-person workshops which focussed on the neuroscience of self-regulation along with strategies and practical activities that dancers can use to support the emotional regulation of the young dancers they work with.

‘The Neurophysiology of Early Childhood Development’ session delved into research in early childhood development which highlighted the value of dance in supporting neurophysiological development.

‘The Just Right State’ session focussed in on emotional regulation strategies, such as breathing activities, sensory activities, and the power of movement in self-regulation.

The sessions delivered practical skills in applying emotion coaching. Dr Janet Rose, is co-founder of Emotion Coaching UK, an organisation which trains and researches the use of Emotion Coaching as a practical strategy to support the development of children’s and young people’s self-regulation, behaviour, wellbeing and resilience.
