Dr Janet Rose explores how communication shapes young minds on the Thriving Language podcast

Principal Dr Janet Rose was featured on the Thriving Language podcast discussing the powerful role of communication in early childhood development.
In the episode on 14 July, Dr Rose explored how the way we talk and interact with young children has a profound impact on their brain development. Drawing on the concept of ‘serve and return’ interactions, she explained how children’s brains are biologically wired to connect, and how responsive communication helps to build the neural pathways that support social, emotional and cognitive growth.
A key focus of the conversation was emotion coaching which is an evidence-based tool that supports children, particularly during moments of distress. Dr Rose described how this approach not only helps children learn to self-regulate and build resilience but also shapes their neurophysiology through co-regulation with a trusted adult.
Dr Rose also highlighted how Norland students are trained as early years professionals to optimise children’s brain development through their communication. She highlighted how Norland students learn how to apply attuned, responsive practice—ensuring that Norland Nannies are equipped to support the emotional wellbeing and development of every child in their care.
Dr Rose’s insights reflect Norland’s commitment to blending cutting-edge research with practical training, preparing our students to be emotionally intelligent early years professionals.
The Thriving Language podcast discusses all things early years helping build confidence for early years professionals in their practice.
Dr Rose’s exploration of emotion coaching and her interview with the Thriving Language podcast was subsequently used by the Ontario Community Training and Development Centre’s Childcare Education Programme. Norland is a partner of the programme, which provides free training to those interested in early education with information on early developmental stages and supporting young children’s learning.
