How I fund my studies: second-year student Elena
16 July 2025
Choosing to study at Norland is a big decision and figuring out how to fund your education is a key part of that journey. As a highly specialised and vocational higher education institution with higher fees, our students fund their studies in a variety of ways.
In this blog, Elena (Set 47) shares how she balances her studies with a mix of temporary and holiday nannying jobs, as well as babysitting. Not only does this help her financially, but it also enriches her learning experience at Norland.
“I’ve always had a passion for working with children and being part of Norland has been an incredibly rewarding experience. The blend of academic learning and hands-on training makes it a truly unique place to study.
“I first discovered Norland through a family friend who had heard about Norland Nannies and immediately thought of me. She suggested to my mum that we look into it and, after doing some research, I was instantly drawn to the unique training that Norland offers. The more I learned, the more I felt that Norland was where I belonged.
“What really confirmed it for me was attending one of their open days. Hearing directly from staff and students about the course, opportunities and incredible support available to students, brought it all to life. My parents also completely fell in love with Norland and said they could really see me thriving there. We left the open day feeling excited and confident. The energy in the building was infectious, with everyone passionate about childcare and eager to be part of something special.
“For me, the balance of theory and real-world experience was exactly what I was looking for. I knew that at Norland, I’d be learning from the best while also applying that knowledge in practical settings, working directly with children.

Earning while at Norland
“The earning opportunities available through Norland have been incredibly helpful during my time as a student. I’ve found most of my roles through the Norland Job Shop, which has been absolutely fantastic. The team is always friendly, supportive, and quick to share new opportunities, keeping us updated on the latest jobs as they come in.
“Holiday nannying has played a crucial role in supporting me throughout my studies. It’s allowed me to gain practical experience while also earning an income. I typically take on jobs during term breaks or weekends, and I’ve had the privilege of working with some wonderful families.
“One of the most memorable experiences was spending time with a family at their holiday home in London. We enjoyed some amazing days out, and I helped create special memories that the children were eager to share with their friends when they returned to school.
“Thanks to Norland’s term structure, fitting nannying around my studies has been really manageable. I have the flexibility to take on holiday roles that align with school holidays. I’ve also worked regularly for a local family in Bath, supporting them as they welcomed a new baby. Being there for the family over a longer period was an incredibly special experience — I formed strong bonds and built trust with both the child and the parents.

Balancing working and studying
“For me, it’s all about finding the right balance. Everyone’s situation is different, and how you choose to manage your time is very personal. The flexibility offered by the Job Shop and Marvellous Babysitting is incredibly helpful, as it allows me to fit work around my studies and other commitments in a way that works best for me.
“I typically work more during the week on Thursdays and Fridays after college with regular families in Bath, and I use the Marvellous Babysitting app more often during holidays and weekends. Having regular families and a steady income has helped ease my nerves about covering fees and living costs.
Even more importantly, its allowed me to build lasting relationships with families who now regularly request me through the Marvellous app. The ability for families to re-book you creates trust, consistency, and a sense of professional connection that benefits both the nanny and the family.
“I also plan ahead by deciding which holidays I want to work and setting a budget accordingly. For example, I usually choose to work over Easter and summer but take time off at Christmas. This approach helps me stay on top of my finances while also giving myself space to rest when I need it.
“Working alongside my studies has actually enhanced my learning. Seeing the theory we learn in class brought to life and applied in real-world settings is so valuable.

Applying what we learn at Norland
“Having access to both the Norland Job Shop and Marvellous Babysitting app has really supported me, not just financially, but also in building confidence and practical experience while I’m still training. Each job gives me the chance to apply what I’m learning in class and continue developing as a future Norland Nanny. Personally, I’ve chosen to take on jobs only through these platforms because they work well for me, and I have a high level of trust in them. I feel confident using them, knowing they offer a safe and reliable way to find work that fits around my schedule.
“One of the most rewarding aspects of nannying while studying at Norland is being able to apply what I’ve learned in lectures almost straight away. Whether it’s using techniques for key transitions like potty training or moving a child from a cot to a bed or practising effective communication strategies with both children and parents, the theory we study becomes so much more meaningful when you see it working in real-life situations.
“Nannying alongside my training has also helped me develop a wide range of soft skills, such as time management, adaptability, and confidence. Balancing work and study in this way has taught me how to stay organised and work efficiently, which I know will be incredibly valuable in my future career.
“Every job and placement has helped me grow, not just as a student, but as a developing professional.”
